The challenge

Scaling the business on a stable foundation

BetterUp prioritized redesigning and rebuilding two platforms critical to their product — an Analytics Dashboard and an Assessments Framework. Both struggled to handle high user volumes, and many accounts hit performance and latency issues that made it hard to scale and onboard larger clients.

Serving enterprise partners and systems

BetterUp works with over 2,000 organizations and serves 500K employees, so performance, privacy, and security were vital. As they signed several enterprise contracts in a short period, they needed experienced engineers to augment their team and meet complex, specialized requirements.

Hiring the right talent, fast

Hiring and onboarding can take upwards of six months. Rather than wait, BetterUp enlisted Rootstrap's senior engineers, who integrated alongside 100+ BetterUp developers in small groups and were productive immediately.

What we did

Owned the development cycle

Senior Rootstrap engineers managed sprints, led daily stand-ups, and took ownership of both platforms — running focused working sessions on enhancements while fixing performance issues. New features let customers measure progress, view outcomes such as employee retention, and manage users.

Rebuilt the assessments framework

The Whole Person™ Model relies on Assessments to track engagement and performance. Rootstrap rebuilt the code and database so creating assessments became self-service — team leads could generate new assessments independently instead of depending on engineering.

Reconfigured the analytics dashboard

Directly linked to Assessments, the Dashboard was rebuilt to demonstrate value to BetterUp's customers. Partner companies could view usage metrics and gauge employee performance, supporting retention and renewals.

Expanded into the EU

Rootstrap migrated BetterUp's databases from US-based servers to the EU and brought the platform into compliance with GDPR and other EU regulations, unblocking international expansion.

The results

• The analytics dashboard scaled from 5,000 to over 100,000 users per account.
• BetterUp reached a milestone of two million member sessions.
• Customers measured a 52% reduction in employee burnout and a 66% increase in productivity.
