After months of complaining, whining, and making outrageous claims like, “I’m not updating my iPhone!” Apple lovers can finally rejoice over the return of Google Maps to the iPhone. AllthingsD recently reported that a maps app is set to hit the Apple app store tonight.
The beloved app returns to iPhones a full three months after it was replaced by Apple’s own maps app. And a whirlwind of a three months it’s been! 3-D graphics were melting into pipe-dream-esque hallucinations, Apple execs were fired, an image of the Eiffel Tower was flattened…Apple maps was a roller coaster ride of blunders.
But even after all of its pitfalls, to be brutally honest (and I’m going out on a limb here saying this), Apple Maps really weren’t that bad. Sure, they were no Google Maps, but Google spent almost a decade driving up and down everyone’s street just so users can zoom in on people’s houses and hope for a sneak peek inside. And so what if The Eiffel Tower was flattened! Does that really affect your ability to get from A to B?
I know that in the first few days of Apple Maps, there were all these people tweeting about how Apple Maps led them to an abandoned warehouse 20 miles from their destination. And that really sucks. But Apple got things together soon enough. The only legitimate complaints I heard about the app were its lack of detail in places like rural Georgia. But then again, if you do actually live in rural Georgia, then Apple maps is probably the least of your worries.
Tonight, the directionally challenged can sleep easy knowing that Google Maps will be safely nestled on their iPhone soon. But in the future, can we all try to keep it together if our phone’s 3-D image of the local Jamba Juice is a little blurry? Remember how we used to get around? With an actual map, or the Thomas Guide, or a tear-filled phone call to a friend. Let’s be thankful those days are over. And yes, of course, let’s be thankful that the ability to see into people’s houses has been restored to our iPhones. Thank you Google Maps!
